In the early 1950s, 148-horsepower Caterpillar D8 tractors were commonly used in the construction industry to push load scrapers, but were underpowered. Caterpillar introduced a 185-hoursepower version of the D8, followed in 1955 by the 286-horsepower D9D, but it still wasn't enough, and competitor Terex introduced their TC12 with two Detroit diesel engines producing over 500 horsepower.

In 1964, R. A. "Buster" Peterson of the Peterson Tractor Company designed this arrangement, combining the horsepower of two D9Gs to reduce cycle times in scraper loading applications while requiring only one operator. Caterpillar adopted the design in 1968 and built them until 1980 when the D10 was introduced and replaced it. This 1979 Caterpillar Dual Quad-Trac D9, using two D9H tractors, was one of the last built in 1979.
