Hughes-Durbin Building on September 4, 2006
The Hughes-Durbin Building was originally built as a two-story brick building in 1916, nearly ten years after J. F. Hughes and Frank W. Durbin purchased the lot. Following construction, Lulu Bush acquired a part interest in the building as well. In the 1920s this building became the home of Salem’s J. C. Penney story and remained so for the next several decades.

The building was renovated around 1945 into a three-story Modern-style building with a stucco facade. More recently it was the home of a retail variety store called the Metropolitan, and the building is now better known as the Metropolitan Building.

After being vacant since 1999, a recent renovation completed in 2008 added a large structure on the roof, bringing the building to a total of 40,000 square feet with 14 apartments.
