U.S. Mint Building on October 20, 2009
In the 1860s, gold was discovered in the Canyon City area of Oregon and in Idaho. Because of the cost and loss risk of transporting gold to San Francisco or Denver, Congress appropriated money for the construction of a mint in The Dalles in 1864.

Hand-hewn stone was moved by cart from Mill Creek, but construction ran two-years behind schedule due to a lack of workers, flooding and cost overruns. Meanwhile, the gold fields around Canyon City dried up and the project was abandoned in 1867.

In June of 1870, the U.S. Government transferred the property and unfinished building to the State of Oregon for educational or other charitable work, and the state later deeded it to the Wasco Independent Academy, but it was never used for education.

Ultimately the building was finished and was used as a flour mill and by a telecommunication company. Now it and the concrete-block addition on its north side are the home of Erin Glenn Wines.
