Military Vehicles at the 2009 Great Oregon Steam-Up

The 2009 Steam Up also featured a display of antique military vehicles and National Guard Appreciation.

1918 Class B Liberty Truck

The Class B Liberty Truck was first built in 1917 and was used in World War I. 15 different manufacturers built Liberty Trucks.

This one, displayed by the Oregon Military Museum in Clackamas, Oregon was built August 27, 1918 and its manufacturer is unknown. It has a gross weight of 17,000 pounds, a payload of 6,000 pounds and a top speed of 14 miles per hour.

1942 M3A1 Stuart Light Tank

This 1942 M3A1 Stuart Light Tank was manufactured by American Car & Foundry of Berwick, Pennsylvania. It is one of 4,410 produced in 1942. With the development of more advanced tanks, the design was considered obsolete by 1943. It is powered by a 242-horsepower, 668-cubic-inch Continental W670-9A 7-cylinder radial engine. With a gross weight 28,515 pounds, the tank's fuel economy is 1.1 miles per gallon.

Armament consists of one 37mm gun with 106 rounds, three .30 caliber machine guns with a combined 7,220 rounds, one .45 caliber Thompson submachine gun with 350 rounds & 12 hand grenades. The tank's 4-man crew consists of a commander, a loader/gunner, a driver & a bow gunner. This example is owned & was restored by Steve Greenberg of Wilsonville, Oregon.

This 1942 Ford GPW, owned by Chuck Walters & Steve Natta, was delivered on November 17, 1942 and was restored from September 2000 to November 2003.

1942 Dodge WC-56 3/4-Ton Command Car

This 1942 Dodge WC-56 3/4-Ton Command Car, one of about 24,000 built from 1942 to 1944, was built on July 21, 1942 and used in Europe in  WWII. It is powered by a 95-horsepower 230-ci 6-cylinder engine with a 4-speed transmission, has a top speed of 45 miles per hour and weighs 4800 pounds. It is owned by Rollin & Sheri Zaugg of Sandy, Oregon.

This 1943 Dodge WC-56 3/4-Ton Command Car, owned by Mark & Gunnar Sigrist of Sandy, OR, was used in the Military Vehicle Preservation Association's 2009 Transcontinental Motor Convoy from Washington DC to San Francisco.

1943 Ford GPA

This 1943 Ford GPA, loan to the Oregon Military Museum, is one of over 12,000 built in two years before production stopped in 1943. It is built on a Jeep chassis with a watertight hull, with a gross weight of 4,460 pounds, it has a payload 800 pounds and is able to transport 5 troops with a top speed of 60 miles per hour on land and 5.5 miles per hour on water.

This 1952 Willys M38A1C with 106mm recoilless rifle & .50 caliber spotting rifle is from the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum in Hood River, Oregon & was restored by Brian Brandt. 101,488 M38A1s were built (including exports), and some remained in military service into the 1970s.

1961 Dodge M37B1 3/4-Ton Cargo Truck

This 1961 Dodge M37B1 3/4-Ton Cargo Truck was originally owned by the United States Marine Corps. It was later owned by the Jackson County Sheriff for Search & Rescue service. It is owned by Rex Newell of Keizer, Oregon.

1963 Blaw-Knox/Pacific Car & Foundry M116 Husky Amphibious Cargo Carrier

This 1963 Blaw-Knox/Pacific Car & Foundry M116 Husky Amphibious Cargo Carrier is one of approximately 500 built and is owned by Jason Ball. It is powered by a 160-horsepower Chevrolet 283 V8 with a General Motors 305MC 4-speed automatic transmission. It has a top speed of 35 miles per hour on land and 4 miles per hour on water with a range of 220-260 miles on land and 22 miles on water.

This SGPMSMD Shop Equipment Trailer was manufactured by the Southwest Truck Body Company for the U.S. Army.

It features a 60 kilowatt White-Diesel generator set with a Hobart DC Welder, a 60,000 BTU furnace, 27-inch lathe, drill press, air compressor and more, plus tent accessories to enclose the trailer when the clamshell doors are open. It was being sold by the Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society.
