Milwaukie #2: Broetje House

The Victorian-style John F. & John H. Broetje House was built in 1889. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 15, 1987.

Until 2013, the Broetje House was used as a bed and breakfast and a venue for special events like weddings. In 2014 it became the home of Pioneer Quilts.

The estate features a four-story water tower that was built in 1909 and is surrounded by century-old sequoia redwood trees.

John F. Broetje (1833-1907) immigrated from Germany to Illinois 1854 and moved his family to Portland in 1883.

Broetje was a horticulturist and grew a variety of plants, including, flowers, imported Oriental plants, the giant sequoias that still stand on the property and Concord grapes for winemaking.

His son, John H. Broetje (1864-1943), expanded the family winemaking business, which his daughter Dora continued until her death in the 1970s.

After the end of prohibition, the Broetje winery became the first bonded winery in Clackamas County, operating under the name “The Redwoods.”
