As our family continued through Humboldt Redwoods State Park on March 19, 1992, as part of our 1992 California trip, we visited another grove of trees called, aptly enough, the Big Trees Area. One of the most prominent coast redwood trees in the Big Trees Area is the Flatiron Tree.

The Flatiron Tree is named for the unusual oblong shape of its trunk, which measures 7.5 feet in one direction and 17.5 feet in the other direction, which reminds some of the Flatiron Building in New York City.

Unfortunately, the Flatiron tree fell in January 1995. However, it was not the most important tree in the Big Trees Area.

The Big Trees Area is also home to the Giant Tree. This coast redwood tree took the title of world's biggest tree in November 1991, after the Dyerville Giant fell.

The Giant Tree is 346.5 feet tall. Its trunk has a circumference of 53 feet and a diameter of 17 feet.

Here is a picture of my mom standing in front of the Giant Tree to illustrate just how big this tree really is.
