Originally the Clackamas Rifle Range, Camp Withycombe at 10101 SE Clackamas Road in Clackamas, Oregon, was established as a training camp on May 15, 1909 and was named Camp Benson after Governor Frank W. Benson. Expanded in June 1916 for the mobilization of the Oregon National Guard for the Mexican Expedition commanded by Major General John J. Pershing, the camp was renamed in honor of Governor James Withycombe on June 21, 1916. It was expanded further during World War I when it served as a National Guard headquarters, central supply depot and training center. The grounds of Camp Withycombe include this monument to the soldiers of World War I, erecting in 1927 by the Portland Chapter of the American War Mothers.
