1992 California Trip: Famous One-Log House

While our family was in Phillipsville, California, on our 1992 California trip, we also saw the Famous One-Log House. It was closed, but my dad took this picture of my mom in front of it. The Famous One-Log House was created by Art Schmock in 1946 from a single 42-ton redwood log from a tree that was over 2,100 years old. It took two men eight months to hollow out a room 32 feet long by 7 feet high. It was initially intended to tour the country, but due to its size it spent 25 years in Cummings, California, before being moved to Phillipsville. In 1999 it was moved once again, to Garberville, California.

Simon Benson built this Queen Anne-style home in 1900. It was originally located several blocks away at the corner of 11th and Clay. By 1991, the house was deteriorating and was condemned by the city.

The house was moved to its current location at 1803 SW Park on the corner of Montgomery and Park on January 6, 2000 and was restored. It is now the home of the Portland State University Alumni Association.

Next door to the First Christian Church on Columbia Street, fronting on Broadway, is the Ladd Carriage House, built in 1883 at a cost of over $12,000 as part of the existing estate of William Sargent Ladd (1826-1893). The Carriage House was for built for Ladd's coachmen, horses and carriages; Ladd's home was about two blocks away.

The Carriage House was sold in 1924 and became office space. The First Christian Church purchased it in 1971. In 2005, the church was planning to redevelop the entire block by demolishing everything but the church for the construction of a high-rise condominium building called Ladd Tower.

The Friends of the Ladd Carriage House worked to save the Carriage House, and a plan was worked out to have Ladd Tower take up only half the block, leaving room for the Carriage House to remain, however it would have to be moved temporarily so an underground parking garage could be built under the site. From June 16, 2007 to October 25, 2008 the Carriage House was stored in the parking lot of the Sixth Church of Christ Scientist before being moved back to its original site.

After the move the Carriage House underwent an extensive rehabilitation by OPUS Northwest in 2009 and the Friends of the Ladd Carriage House dedicated a plaque about William S. Ladd, which reads as follows:

Among Portland's founders, few garnered as much praise as William Sargent Ladd. Upon his death it was said, "Portland had no more loyal supporter or ardent advocate than William S. Ladd."

Ladd arrived in the frontier town in 1851, worked hard, prospered, and invested in both the material structure of the city and the quality of its life. He served two terms as mayor of Portland. In 1859 he established the Ladd & Tilton Bank, the first formal banking institution in the Northwest. A year later he helped create the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. With the vast wealth his businesses generated, he contributed generously to the city's cultural, educational and humanitarian institutions.

The Ladd Carriage House was built in 1883 as a stable attached to a greater estate. The Carriage House is the last visible reminder of this pioneer banker, citizen and philanthropist. Its survival and restoration are testaments to William S. Ladd, his architect Joseph Sherwin, and all those who built well and gave back to the city.

Across Fourth Street from the Bonn House is the Bonn Duplex, a Mediterranean-style one-story rectangular building with a flat roof and stepped parapet and small decorative clay-tiles roofs built around 1930. It is the only building of its kind in Trevitt's Addition.

The Dutch Colonial Revival-style Bonn House was built in 1920-1921. N.A. Bonn was Joseph Stadelman's partner in purchasing the Walther-Williams Hardware & Implement Company in 1925. The house is now a bed and breakfast called the Columbia Windrider Inn.

This bungalow was built around 1910 and belonged to a member of the Seufert family. Frank Seufert moved to The Dalles from New York in 1881. He was later joined by his brother Theodore and they established the Seufert Brothers Cannery. By 1896, the cannery was producing 1,500 cases of salmon and fruit per day, employing 125 laborers.

This Colonial Revival house was built around 1909 by attorney W.H. Wilson. It was later sold to Pat Foley, owner of the Hotel Dalles, who lived here from 1922 to 1952. Today the house is known as the Colonial Building and houses the offices of lawyer James M. Habberstad and Somers & Wolf Attorneys at Law.

This Queen Anne-style house was built by wool dealer Samuel and Annie J. Wilkinson in 1902. They sold it to Maximilian A. & Bess Vogt in 1909. Max built the Vogt Opera House downtown and an armory at 3rd and Washington, both of which burned in the great fire of 1891 and were rebuilt later. The house is now a bed & breakfast.

The Queen Anne-style Captain William Polk Gray House was built around 1899 Captain Gray was born in 1845 in Oregon City. In 1860, he began a career on the steamboats of the Columbia River. He married Ocia Falkland Bush, who as born at sea near the Falkland Islands aboard her father's vessel. The Grays later lived in Pasco, Washington.
