The Made in Oregon sign sits on the White Stag Building, built in 1907 for the Willamette Tent & Awning Company.

The sign was erected in 1940 by Ramsay Signs for White Satin Sugar, which rented the space on the roof.

In 1959, the sign was changed to advertise White Stag sportswear. It was changed to "Made in Oregon" in 1997 to support Old Town & Saturday Market.

In 2008, the University of Oregon became the building’s primary tenant, and proposed changing the sign to read “University of Oregon,” which proved to be controversial, as did a 2009 proposal to change the sign to read simply “Oregon” and adding the university’s “O” logo to the adjacent water tower.

In September 2009, the University of Oregon declined to renew its lease on the sign, and the electricity was turned off the following month.

The sign was lit from the Friday before Thanksgiving in 2009 into January of 2010, with the electricity paid for by the president of Ramsay Signs.

In September 2010, the City of Portland took ownership of the sign, and in November the wording on the sign was changed to “Portland Oregon” and on November 26, 2010 the altered sign was turned on.
