This corner is the former site of the Holman Building, which was built by Joseph Holman in 1857. Originally intended as a hotel, after Oregon's first capitol burned on December 29, 1855, the Holman Building became a temporary Legislative Hall until the new capitol was completed in 1876. After serving as a business building, it was demolished in 1950, despite efforts by Oregon State Archivist David Duniway to preserve it for civic use.

The Marion Car Rental & Park replaced the Holman Building in 1950. It was one of Salem's first, if not the first, elevated rooftop parking structures.
