The Italianate style Courtney Block was built in 1891 by Dr. Joseph S. Courtney. Courtney graduate from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1886. He came to Lebanon, making house calls by horse and buggy. He married Ida Susan Montague, daughter of Charles Bruce Montague, the proprietor of a large mercantile store in Lebanon who also served as mayor. A shortage of office space in Lebanon prompted Dr. Courtney to have a brick yard built in Lebanon in order to obtain bricks for this block and the building next door at 730 South Main Street. The building was originally occupied by a photo and printing shop on the north side and a drug store and post office on the south side, with offices on the second floor. Dr. Courtney had an office in the rear of the drug store, and shared a practice with Dr. J.A. Lamberson. Later, Dolph Reeves operated a clothing store in the northern side of the building for many years. More recently, the north side of the building housed a Coast To Coast Hardware store. The building remained owned by the Courtney family for 80 years.

  1. Really cool to find this. This was my great great grandfather. I remember great grandpa telling me stories about his father, Dr Courtney.

  2. My name is Ken Jackola, and I am in the process of buying the building that carries your family's name. I am going to restore the building and in the process of gathering pictures of the front of the building so that I can keep it historically accurate. If you could reply to this message then we can maybe start a dialogue and assist me in my new project.
