In front of the courthouse is a sculpture of an antelope, representing the small town of Antelope, Oregon, where the followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh took over the town and engineered an attack against the people of The Dalles in 1984 using salmonella contamination in an attempt to swing a Wasco County election in their favor. The courthouse was one of the places contaminated. The monument is dedicated to those who opposed the attempts of the Rajneesh followers to take over Wasco County and carried the following quote attributed to Edmund Burke: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
