Longview #34: Blackstone Building

I don't know anything about this building; I discovered it completely by accident. It seems out of place in a neighborhood of single-family houses. It appears to be from Longview's early years, though I don't know what is was built as. I initially thought it was an old hotel. There was once a Blackstone Clinic in Longview; perhaps there is some connection. Today it is used as a low-income apartment building by the Longview Housing Authority.

  1. I was a cab driver and a longtime building resident told me that it was the first apartment building in Longview and when it opened single mill workers lined up to get an apartment. Don't know how much of that is true, but there you go.

    1. That might be true, but about a block away is another brick apartment building, the Sunset Apartments, which I haven't written about yet. It was built by Long-Bell in 1923 with the wooden Longview Hotel next door and they are described in "R.A. Long's Planned City: The Story of Longview" as "the first permanent housing units completed by Long-Bell." In any case it is definitely one of the older buildings in Longview.
