The Jacobethan-style library was designed by the Portland firm Sutton & Whitney. Construction started in 1913 and the library opened in 1914 with 3,000 books. In 1935 the land west of the library was donated to the county and became Georgiana Smith Park. The library and park were placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 28, 1998.
