Near the International Rose Test Garden and the Portland Japanese Garden at the top of a 44-step staircase is this station on the 30-inch gauge Washington Park & Zoo Railway's 1.5-mile Washington Park extension, which opened in 1960.

The extension was surveyed by the Southern Pacific Railroad, constructed with the help of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway and the Portland Terminal Railroad Company and used ballast donated by the school children of Prineville, Oregon and transported by the Union Pacific Railroad at no charge.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, trains stop here to allow Oregon Zoo visitors to also visit the gardens.
