South Park Blocks #13: Peace Chant

In the next of the Park Blocks, between Columbia and Jefferson, is this sculpture by Steve Gillman called Peace Chant. It consists of three large granite pillars and was installed 1984. This block was named Peace Plaza in May 1985 by the Portland City Council.

Nearby is a plaque in honor of historian Terence O’Donnell (1924-2001) “consummate storyteller and friend of Persians,” who lived in an apartment nearby. A native of Portland, O’Donnell lived in Iran from 1957 to 1971 and wrote about his experiences there, as well as about Oregon history.
