Charles Schanno, originally from Alsace-Lorraine, France, established the Columbia Brewery in 1867. Emil Schanno arrived in town in 1869 and purchased the brewery.

August Buchler, who was born in Appenzell, Switzerland in 1841, came to America in 1864 and worked in a Montana mine before working in the Weinhardt Brewery in Portland, bought the Columbia Brewery in 1877 and renamed it the Eastern Oregon Brewery.

Buchler ran the brewery until it was reorganized in 1905 under the management of A. Keller and Charles Inderweis, though Buchler probably still functioned as brewmaster. Heidelberg beer originated at this brewery. The brewery closed when prohibition took effect on January 1, 1916.
