This Gothic Revival house was built around 1860. and is one of the oldest houses in The Dalles. It was the home of Colonel N.H. Gates, "The Father of Dalles City" who incorporated the city in 1857. Gates was a practicing lawyer who was elected mayor five times, served on the city council 1855-1859, 1867-1869, 1873-1875, served as city recorder in 1890, was a member of the legislature for eight years and was speaker of the House of Representatives in 1859.
