Peter J. Stadelman was born in Hempstead, New York October 29, 1871. He came to The Dalles with his family in 1877 and his father Joseph Stadelman, an Austrian immigrant, started a farm on a donation land claim. Peter Stadelman opened a fruit & vegetable business in 1893 which quickly expanded into ice as well. His brother Joseph Stadelman Jr. became a partner in the business as well, which in 1898 had become a wholesale fruit company, selling fruit from Oregon & Washington to eastern markets and buying eastern fruit for western markets. The Stadelmans built an ice plant and cold storage facility around 1909, which I believe was this building.

Joseph Stadelman Jr. left the Stadelman Fruit & Ice Company in 1925, and with N.A. Bonn purchased the Walther-Williams Hardware & Implement Company on Second Street. Peter Stadelman was elected to the city council in 1908 and served to 1914, and was mayor of The Dalles from 1918 to 1928. Stadelman was also president of the Citizens National Bank when it was established. He was appointed Secretary of State by Oregon Governor Julius Meier in 1934 to replace the deceased Hal E. Hoss and held the position until 1935. He served three terms in the Oregon State Senate from 1936 to 1947. Died in 1954. His sons continued running the Stadelman Fruit Company, which still exists today, now based out of Zillah, Washington with another facility in Hood River, Oregon.
