Baldwin Saloon on June 10, 2009
The Baldwin Saloon was built in 1876 and began life as a restaurant before becoming a saloon operated by brothers James and John Baldwin. It was one of four saloons clustered in the immediate area. Dr. Charlie Allen, an optician, later took over the saloon and installed the cast-iron facade from the Golden State Iron Works of San Francisco on the front of the building. Later, the building was a restaurant, a steamboat office, a warehouse, coffin storage for a mortuary and a state employment office. In 1962, it was purchased by Garth & Evelyn Bonney and became the Bonney Saddle Shop; Garth Bonney was a talented craftsman whose saddles were in demand. Bonney retired in 1991 and the building was sold to Mark & Tracy Linebarger, who renovated it back into the Baldwin Saloon and reopened it on December 15, 1991.
