201 East First Street
Chinese Building on June 10, 2009
This building was built 1878 to replace one that burned in the 1877 fire. It was built to be fireproof with a layer of bricks on the roof. It was raised after 1882 to meet the new street grade raised by construction of the railroad. After that, First Street was no longer the main business district. The building was a Chinese laundry and merchandise store from the 1880s to the 1920s, then a dairy distribution building, a furniture warehouse and a workshop.
